Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

The Student Visa (Visado de Estudios) allows non-EU nationals to study in Spain at any accredited institution — from language schools to universities and postgraduate programmes. It is governed by LO 4/2000 and Articles 97–105 of RD 557/2011.

There are three main types: short-stay (up to 180 days, for language courses), long-stay (over 180 days, for degree programmes and extended language courses) and the residence permit for students who are already in Spain. Part-time work up to 30 hours per week is permitted, and after graduation you can convert to a work permit.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Can I work while studying?
Yes, up to 30 hours per week during the academic year and full-time during official holidays — provided you have a long-stay student visa (more than 180 days).
Can I convert to a work permit after graduation?
Yes. After completing your degree in Spain, you can apply for a work search authorisation (autorización de búsqueda de empleo) valid for 12 months, which can be converted to a work permit once you have a job offer.
What institutions are accepted?
Any official, accredited Spanish educational institution — public or private universities, language schools registered with the regional education authority (Comunidad Autónoma), and postgraduate programmes.
Can family members join me?
Dependent minor children can accompany you. Spouses generally cannot apply as family members of a student — they would need their own independent visa.
Is renewal automatic?
No. You must renew the student permit each year as long as your studies continue. Proof of academic progress and continued enrolment is required.
Ready to move forward with your Spain permit?
Start with a free 15-minute call — no forms, no commitment. I'll confirm your route, eligibility and the right package for your situation.
