Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

EU citizens have the right to live and work freely in Spain under RD 240/2007 (transposing EU Directive 2004/38/EC). However, to live legally in Spain for more than 3 months, you must register at the Registro Central de Extranjeros — which gives you your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) and the EU Registration Certificate (Certificado de Registro de Ciudadano de la Unión).

While the right exists automatically, the administrative process involves multiple appointments, forms and specific documents that many EU citizens get wrong on their first attempt. I prepare your complete file remotely, so your in-person appointment in Spain goes smoothly from the first visit.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Do EU citizens need a visa for Spain?
No. EU citizens have the right to free movement under EU law and do not need a visa. However, for stays over 3 months you must register at the Registro Central de Extranjeros to obtain your EU Registration Certificate and NIE.
What is the NIE?
The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your Spanish tax and identity number. It is required for almost every administrative process in Spain — opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, registering a car, filing taxes.
What is empadronamiento?
Empadronamiento is your municipal registration at the Ayuntamiento (town hall) of the municipality where you live. It is required for health card access, school registration and several permit applications.
Can you do this remotely?
Yes. I prepare your complete file (forms, documents, covering letter) remotely. You then attend one appointment in Spain to submit — which is typically quick and smooth with a correct, complete file.
What if I'm self-employed?
EU citizens can work as self-employed (autónomo) in Spain. You'll need to register with Hacienda and Social Security in addition to the residency registration. I include this in the A-to-Z package.
Ready to move forward with your Spain permit?
Start with a free 15-minute call — no forms, no commitment. I'll confirm your route, eligibility and the right package for your situation.
