Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

The Digital Nomad Visa (Visado de Nómada Digital) was introduced by Spain's Ley de Startups 28/2022 and came into force in January 2023. It allows employees of foreign companies and self-employed professionals with non-Spanish clients to live and work legally in Spain — one of the most accessible remote work visas in Europe.

There are two routes: Route A for employees of a foreign company (autorización de residencia para trabajadores a distancia) and Route B for self-employed professionals and freelancers whose clients are outside Spain. Both require a minimum income of approximately €2,849/month (200% of Spain's minimum wage) and allow you to reside in Spain for 3 years, renewable.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Who qualifies for the Digital Nomad Visa?
Employees of foreign companies who can work remotely, and self-employed professionals or freelancers whose clients are entirely based outside Spain. You must earn at least €2,849/month.
Can I apply from Spain?
Yes — if you're already in Spain legally, you apply to UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas) for the residence permit directly. If abroad, you apply for the visa at a Spanish consulate first.
Can my family join me?
Yes. Spouse or registered partner and dependent children can be included in the same application, with a slight income uplift required per dependent.
How long does it take?
UGE processes applications within 20 business days. With a complete, correct file this is generally respected. Consulate timelines vary (4–12 weeks).
Is it renewable?
Yes, for 2-year periods, as long as you continue to meet the income and employment requirements.
