Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the tax and identification number assigned to every foreigner in Spain. It is required for almost every formal process — signing a contract, opening a bank account, registering a car, filing taxes or applying for a residence permit.

The TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) is the physical biometric card issued to non-EU residents with a valid residence permit. It is your proof of legal residence in Spain and serves as your primary identity document for day-to-day use. EU citizens receive the EU Registration Certificate (Certificado de Registro) instead of the TIE.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Do I need a NIE before applying for a residence permit?
For most permit applications, you need a NIE as part of the process. In practice, the NIE and the permit application are often initiated together, or the NIE is obtained first through a consulate.
How is the TIE different from the NIE?
The NIE is a number — it identifies you in Spanish systems. The TIE is a physical card with your photo and biometric data, issued once you have a valid residence permit. You need both the NIE and the TIE as a non-EU resident.
How do I get a cita previa?
Through the Spanish government's cita previa system (sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es). Appointments are scarce in major cities. I manage the appointment process as part of the service.
Can I travel outside Spain while waiting for my TIE?
If you have the resguardo (application receipt), you can remain in Spain. Travel outside Schengen is more complex — check with me before booking.
What if I've lost my TIE?
You can apply for a replacement. I handle the full process including the appointment.
