The Permiso por Cuenta Propia is the residence and work permit for non-EU nationals who wish to work as freelancers, independent contractors or self-employed professionals in Spain. It is governed by LO 4/2000 and processed by UGE (Unidad de Grandes Empresas) under Art. 105 of RD 557/2011.

Unlike the Digital Nomad Visa, the Cuenta Propia permit allows you to work with Spanish clients — making it the right route if you want to build a client base in Spain, work with Spanish companies, or combine Spanish and international clients. The key requirement is demonstrating sufficient economic activity and means.

What's the difference between Cuenta Propia and the Digital Nomad Visa?▼

The Digital Nomad Visa requires all clients to be outside Spain. Cuenta Propia allows you to work with Spanish clients and build a business in Spain. If you plan to serve Spanish clients, Cuenta Propia is the correct route.

Do I need to register as autónomo?▼

Yes. As part of the permit, you will register with Hacienda and Social Security as a self-employed professional (autónomo). I include Social Security registration in the A-to-Z package.

Can I run a limited company?▼

The Cuenta Propia permit is for self-employed individuals. If you want to operate through a Spanish SL (sociedad limitada), a different structure applies — which I can advise on.

How long does it take?▼

UGE processes applications within 20 business days of a complete and correct file.

Is it renewable?▼

Yes, for 2-year periods, provided you continue to demonstrate sufficient income and professional activity.
