FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Can I work on the Non-Lucrative Visa?
No. This visa explicitly prohibits any form of work in Spain — employed or self-employed. If you intend to work, you need a different permit (Digital Nomad, Cuenta Propia or work permit).
What counts as passive income?
Bank savings, pension income, investment dividends, rental income from properties outside Spain, royalties and similar passive sources. The key is that you are not working for it.
How often does it need to be renewed?
Initially valid for 1 year. Then renewable for 2-year periods, as long as you continue to meet the income requirements and maintain habitual residence in Spain.
Can family members be included?
Yes. Spouse or registered partner and dependent children can be included, with a 50% income uplift per additional family member.
Does it lead to permanent residency?
Yes. After 5 years of continuous legal residence (including renewals), you can apply for long-term residency (residencia de larga duración) under Art. 32 LO 4/2000.
