Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

Family reunification in Spain (reagrupación familiar) allows non-EU residents with valid Spanish permits to bring their closest family members to live with them legally. It is governed by Articles 16–20 of LO 4/2000 and developed in RD 557/2011.

The process involves two parallel tracks: the sponsor (the person already in Spain with a valid permit) files the reunification application at Extranjería, while the family member applies for the visa at the Spanish consulate in their country of residence. I coordinate both sides to ensure the timing and documentation align.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

Who qualifies for family reunification?
Spouse or registered partner, minor children under 18 (including adopted), adult children with disabilities who are dependent, and dependent parents of the sponsor or their spouse.
Does my spouse get a work permit?
Yes. The reunification permit includes the right to work in Spain on the same basis as the sponsor.
How long does the process take?
Extranjería has 3 months to resolve the application. Consulate processing for the visa varies by country (typically 2–6 weeks after Extranjería approval).
What if my documents are from a non-EU country?
Documents must be apostilled (Hague Convention countries) or legalised (other countries) and accompanied by a certified Spanish translation by a sworn translator.
Can I include multiple family members?
Yes. Multiple family members can be included in the same application, though the income requirements increase with each additional person.
