Overview

What you need to knowabout this route.

Under Article 198 of RD 557/2011, all Spanish residence and work permits must be renewed between 60 days before expiry and 90 days after. Applying within this window maintains your legal status and avoids the administrative complications of an expired permit.

The renewal process varies by permit type — each has different income thresholds, documentation requirements and processing timelines. I handle renewals for all major permit types: Digital Nomad Visa, Non-Lucrative, Cuenta Propia, Startup Visa, student visa, family reunification permits and work permits.

FAQ

Frequently askedquestions.

When exactly should I apply?
No earlier than 60 days before your permit expires, and no later than 90 days after expiry. The ideal window is 45–60 days before expiry — enough time to gather documents without rushing.
What if my permit has already expired?
You can still apply within 90 days after expiry under Art. 198 RD 557/2011 — your legal status is maintained during this period. After 90 days, you may need a different process. Contact me immediately if your permit has expired.
Do all conditions need to be met again?
Yes. You need to demonstrate you continue to meet the original permit requirements — income, insurance, accommodation. If your circumstances have changed (income dropped, changed employment) this needs careful handling.
How long does renewal take?
Typically 1–3 months depending on permit type and volume at the relevant authority. I submit a complete, correct file to minimise delays.
Can I travel while my renewal is pending?
Once your renewal application is submitted and you have the resguardo (receipt), you can generally continue to reside in Spain. Travel outside the Schengen area is more complex — I advise on this case by case.
